It’s a Wrap!

Thanks to our generous donors and supporters, our annual Wrap to Rap event at Macy’s on November 17, 2015 was a festive and lively success! The over 700 holiday gifts our volunteer wrapped will bring lots of joy to children in foster care!

NYFC’s Board of Directors, Friends Committee, Youth Advisory Board members, Youth Ambassadors, and Macy’s very own CEO, Chairman of the Board, President, and Director at Macy’s, Terry Lundgren joined forces to wrap over 700 holiday gifts for children in care. These presents will be distributed by the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) to children staying at the ACS Children’s Center.

After wrapping the donated gifts to the beat of rap songs mixed by DJ D-Nice Jones, volunteers had a chance to hear a captivating “‘Twas the Night before Christmas” story by the one and only Santa Claus, much to their delight. Santa’s happy helpers, the elves were also present and welcomed guests to the Christmas décor of Santaland.

Finally, to conclude the evening, Terry Lundgren, NYFC Board member and Macy’s Chief Merchandise Planning Officer, Patti Ongman, Friends Committee Co-Chairs, Elisabeth Jones-Hennessy and Clare McKeon, and Youth Advisory Board leaders Anthony and Peterson acknowledged the tremendous impact NYFC has on youth in foster care. Anthony and Peterson raffled off prizes for the youth volunteers including Macy’s and Starbucks’ gift cards and Amazon Kindles!

In addition to providing much needed holidays gifts to these children, Wrap to Rap reminds our teen volunteers of the importance of giving back to their communities. Thank you to all for sharing in the spirit of the season and brightening the holiday for a child in care!

Thank you for giving NYC’s youth in foster care

Eric Brettschneider Appointed President of the Board

Nicholas Scoppetta, Founder & President Will Remain as President Emeritus

On June 6, 2013, New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) appointed Eric Brettschneider President of the Board of Directors. Nicholas Scoppetta, the organization’s founder, has held this position since NYFC’s inception in 1996.  Brettschneider has been a member of NYFC’s Board of Directors for 15 years, and currently serves as the Chairman of the Program, Audit and Strategic Planning Committees. Scoppetta, who retired as President, will remain involved with the organization as President Emeritus.

“We have focused on educational programs that help youth leaving foster care become self-sufficient.  That includes all forms of education, academic, vocational and important life-skills.  Education is the key to opportunity for these young people. I step down with some reluctance and more than a touch of sadness. NYFC has its roots in my personal history and has been an important part of my life for the past 17 years. However, those feelings are tempered by the fact that my successor is Eric Brettschneider, a talented, experienced child welfare professional who I am confident will build on and enhance the success we have enjoyed,” said Nicholas Scoppetta.

As one of New York City’s most dedicated and effective public servants, Scoppetta has worked under every New York City Mayor since John V. Lindsay, spending nearly five decades in City and Federal government. Currently Chairman of the city’s Conflict of Interest Board, Scoppetta served as Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Deputy Mayor and Commissioner of Investigation, and Associate Counsel to the Knapp Commission. In 1996, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani tapped him to be the City’s first Commissioner of the newly formed ACS. Under Scoppetta’s leadership, ACS engaged in a comprehensive reform of the City’s child welfare system that won praise from national experts.

In 2002 Scoppetta became Fire Commissioner and rebuilt the Department, which had been devastated by the September 11th terrorist attacks. Upon his retirement from the FDNY in 2010, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “Nearly every mayor over the last 50 years has turned to Nick Scoppetta for help – usually to get the City through a crisis.  Few ever have served our City so long or so well.”

It was during his tenure as ACS Commissioner that Scoppetta founded New Yorkers For Children – a deeply personal endeavor. As a young child, Scoppetta and his siblings were removed from their home and placed into foster care. Since NYFC’s founding, Scoppetta has been committed to connecting with youth in care on a personal level and to guiding NYFC in making a larger impact on the child welfare system by bridging the gap and providing services the government cannot offer. Over the past 17 years, NYFC has distributed over $50 million in funds to youth in care through direct programs, as well as through partnerships with ACS and other youth servicing organizations.

“The honor of serving New Yorkers For Children is magnified by the fact that Nick Scoppetta, a heroic leader, has been its President since NYFC’s founding. We will continue the tradition Nick established – empowering the child welfare community,” said Brettschneider.

Brettschneider is one of the foremost experts in child welfare. Currently the Chief of Staff and Assistant Commissioner at the New York State Office of Children & Family Services and President of the Viola W. Bernard Foundation, Brettschneider brings over 45 years of experience in both the private and public sectors to the position of President of the Board of Directors at NYFC. He is also a member of the faculty at NYU. Brettschneider entered child welfare and human services in 1967 as a family court intake worker and child care worker, before spending 10 years as Director of The Queens Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (now Safe Space).

In 1980, he joined the New York State Department of Social Services, where he worked on the implementation of the Child Welfare Reform Act. While Deputy Commissioner for The New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA), Brettschneider was instrumental in implementing major advances for Children’s Services. He continued his work on behalf of New York City children and their families for almost 20 years as Executive Director of the Agenda for Children Tomorrow. As NYFC President, Brettschneider is committed to furthering the initial goals that led Scoppetta to found NYFC, and continuing his legacy of improving the conditions and futures of youth in foster care in New York City.

Help Us Make a Call That Can Change a Life

Glenn was in his senior year at Howard University when he learned that his financial aid and student loans weren’t going to cover his tuition.  Having just aged out of foster care, Glenn didn’t have anywhere to turn for support.  He tried applying to banks and foundations for additional loans and scholarships, but was told over and over again that he wasn’t eligible for their programs.

With his tuition bill overdue, Glenn’s school gave him three days to move out of his dorm.  After working so hard on his education, it was devastating to think that he may not be able to finish school.  As he began packing up his belongings, Glenn received a phone call that would change his life.

NYFC is Celebrating 15 Years with the 15 for 15 Campaign!

In 2011, NYFC sent out over 900 Back-to-School Packages to college-enrolled youth in foster care. The NYFC Back-to-School Package Program began in 1999, when 23 packages were sent to students in care.

NYFC has awarded $992,500 in scholarships for youth in foster care through the NYFC Guardian Scholars Program and Spirit Award. Today, scholarship recipients are gainfully employed in the fields of education, social work, public policy, finance, and technology.

NYFC has directly impacted 2,450 youth in foster care in the areas of employment, education, and life skills through the grants we have provided to the Administration for Children’s Services and other non-profits organizations that serve children in foster care.

Since 2004, over 1,500 youth have learned about post-secondary options and employment through NYFC Educational Conferences, Vocational Conferences, and Network to Success events.

In celebration of 15 successful years of improving the lives of youth in foster care in New York City, we are asking all of our friends to make a $15 donation to help us continue to support the 15,000 children in foster care today.

NYFC Back-to-School Package Program: Jamar’s Story

“I couldn’t believe it.  Out of nowhere, someone cared enough to send me exactly what I needed for school.”

My name is Jamar and I am a freshman at John Jay College. One day, I hope to become a criminal psychologist or a district attorney.

When my friends would get mail and packages from home, I always felt a little sad because I knew nothing was ever going to come for me. Boy was I ever surprised to receive the Back-to-School Package from New Yorkers For Children.  From that point on, I knew that I was not alone. Knowing that someone cares about me really gives me the strength to do my best in school.

Before I got my laptop it was very difficult to do my school work.  The lines for the public computers were always so long and the time limit was too short for me to do a good job.  I spent many long nights waiting for my turn which definitely was a physical and emotional strain.

This laptop is the greatest gift I have ever received. Now I can focus on my school work and get my homework done more efficiently. Your support means a great deal to me and has changed my life in so many ways. I will not let you down.

NYFC Youth Advisory Board volunteers at NAC Kids Olympics

On June 19, 2010, New Yorkers For Children’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB) volunteered at the the face painting booth for children with severe disabilities at the 5th Annual New Alternatives for Children (NAC) Kids Olympics.  Larry Harris, Nicole Esposito, and Arlenis Sosa were on hand to show their support.  Over 600 NAC children and family members participated in activities including relay races (with and without wheelchairs), rock-climbing, soccer and gymnastics at Chelsea Piers.  These activities enable NAC’s special children to overcome physical and mental obstacles, meet new challenges and build self-esteem; as well as experience team spirit and healthy competition, get lots of exercise, and, most importantly, have a memorable and fun day as parents and friends cheer them on.  Most of NAC’s children are living in poverty; many have had more surgeries than birthdays; and too many have lived the first years of their life in sterile hospital wards, not out of medical necessity but because their families could not care for them at home.

The YAB is a group of high school and college students in foster care who serve as advocates for youth in foster care in New York City.  They meet at NYFC once a month to plan events and programs that positively impact younger children in foster care. The YAB also advises NYFC on the needs and desires of older youth in foster care and provides an opportunity for these youth to meet and socialize with one another.

New Yorkers For Children Funds Thirteen New Programs

In June 2008, New Yorkers For Children issued our first Request For Proposals (RFP) to foster care and preventive service agencies, supportive programs, and community based organizations that serve youth in foster care in New York City. NYFC was thrilled to receive 47 proposals in response to our RFP.

After a thorough review of the organizations and proposals by the Board of Directors’ Program Committee, NYFC funded 13 new programs in this grant year for a total of $816,101:

Children’s Aid Society’s Next Generation Center (NGC)

NYFC’s support will fund an Education Coordinator and a Youth Development Services Coordinator who will address the specialized needs of disconnected youth, with a focus on young adults who have been involved with the child welfare system.

Coalation for Hispanic Families

Funding will enhance the agency’s current Preparing Youth for Adulthood (PYA) program with a social skills development program that will provide training for 50 youth in care.

Fund For Social Change

NYFC will join a funding collaborative to promote the hiring of Parent Advocates by foster care agencies. These advocates are parents whose children have been placed in care, and have change their lives for the better, received extensive training, and have been reunited with their children. The collaborative will support a competitive process for foster care agencies to apply for funds to hire, train, support, and evaluate the Parent Advocate Initiative by the University of Chicago at Chapin Hall.

Good Shepherd

NYFC’s financial support will allow for the expansion and enhancement of the family engagement efforts of the Permanency Unit. Good Shepherd will hire a Parent Advocate to engage selected families in a residential facility with an ongoing program of workshops, activities and retreats to strengthen family bonds and parenting skills.

Graham Windham

As a result of NYFC funding, Graham Windham will engage in recruitment of new foster homes targeted for teenagers in their community of origin, focusing on Highbridge in the Bronx and East Harlem in Manhattan.

Jewish Child Care Association (JCCA)

This grant will support the design of a replicable model for family foster care that incorporates the principles and techniques of the Sanctuary Model, a trauma informed treatment model that JCCA introduced in their Westchester Campus. The Sanctuary Model provides both a philosophy and specific tools that will allow JCCA to better prepare youth for adulthood, improve family interactions among youth, their families and foster families and ensure permanency for children in care.

New Alternatives For Children (NAC)

NAC’s mission is to provide innovative, high quality services to families who are caring for children with special medical needs at home. With funding from NYFC, the One Step Forward program will encompass an array of youth development activities that meet the special needs of medically fragile teens and young adults and their siblings who are at present or have been in foster care.

New York Center For Children

The new Group Therapy program for youth in foster care, which will receive financial support from NYFC, aims to facilitate healthy transitions to successful adulthood. The program will focus on psychological issues as well as provide support and resources to help empower the teens.

New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC)

Through the support of NYFC, NYSPCC’s will hire a full-time specially trained clinician to provide support to teens, helping them process traumatic experiences and learn skills to manage stress, anxiety and depression to prepare them to become independent adults.

Osborne Association

NYFC’s grant will enhance the New York Initiative for Children of Incarcerated Parents by improving the well-being of older youth in foster care whose parents are in prison through data collection, clinical consultation, permanency planning, training, and policy and practice recommendation.

Safe Space

Funding will provide outreach, case management, education, employment training, independent life skills, support services and arts programming to youth in foster care at a new drop-in center in Far Rockaway, Queens.

The Door

The Door will add a Foster Care Services Coordinator to support their extensive programming for youth in foster care. The new Coordinator will provide young people with the intensive case management and counseling support they need during their transition to independence.

Youth Communications

With Children’s Services’ Office of Advocacy and Office of Youth Development, Youth Communications will use funding to develop a booklet of personal stories on building connections between birth parents and foster parents, written by the parents themselves. The booklet will focus on issues facing parent partners of pre-teens and teens, in particular, in order to support permanency for older youth.
