It’s a Wrap!

Thanks to our generous donors and supporters, our annual Wrap to Rap event at Macy’s on November 17, 2015 was a festive and lively success! The over 700 holiday gifts our volunteer wrapped will bring lots of joy to children in foster care!

NYFC’s Board of Directors, Friends Committee, Youth Advisory Board members, Youth Ambassadors, and Macy’s very own CEO, Chairman of the Board, President, and Director at Macy’s, Terry Lundgren joined forces to wrap over 700 holiday gifts for children in care. These presents will be distributed by the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) to children staying at the ACS Children’s Center.

After wrapping the donated gifts to the beat of rap songs mixed by DJ D-Nice Jones, volunteers had a chance to hear a captivating “‘Twas the Night before Christmas” story by the one and only Santa Claus, much to their delight. Santa’s happy helpers, the elves were also present and welcomed guests to the Christmas décor of Santaland.

Finally, to conclude the evening, Terry Lundgren, NYFC Board member and Macy’s Chief Merchandise Planning Officer, Patti Ongman, Friends Committee Co-Chairs, Elisabeth Jones-Hennessy and Clare McKeon, and Youth Advisory Board leaders Anthony and Peterson acknowledged the tremendous impact NYFC has on youth in foster care. Anthony and Peterson raffled off prizes for the youth volunteers including Macy’s and Starbucks’ gift cards and Amazon Kindles!

In addition to providing much needed holidays gifts to these children, Wrap to Rap reminds our teen volunteers of the importance of giving back to their communities. Thank you to all for sharing in the spirit of the season and brightening the holiday for a child in care!

Thank you for giving NYC’s youth in foster care

Vanessa’s poem inspired by the Spring Event

Because of you
I’m better
you don’t even know
Could you fathom
the many possibilities your presence leave behind?

Because of you
I’m stronger, faster, lighter
Through your nurture and fertilization
I’ve grown despite negation
So this proclamation
comes from a place deep within me
A place before you
I never knew to exist

Because of you
I’m more than who I am
or what I was
You gave me fuel
to fly above
many influences
You gave me experience
You outright birthed me
giving me life
like I died
then you resuscitated me
and gave me LIFE

Yet when you look at me
you don’t even know…
Could you begin to fathom the many possibilities that your presence leaves behind?
Too many to count as I fly
This may sound cliché, but you are the wind beneath my wings
Yet it’s as if you don’t know
All that you do
when you do
what you do
for me, for us

So I have to say thank you
even though that might never be enough
to express my gratitude
for amplifying my latitude.
Thank you.
Could you begin to fathom the many possibilities that your presence leaves behind?

CHIPP Holiday Party 2009

On December 15, 2009, the Children of Incarcerated Parents Program (CHIPP) hosted its sixth annual holiday party at the Rose M. Singer Center on Rikers Island. The event, a joint effort between New Yorkers For Children, the Administration for Children’s Services, and the Department of Corrections, brings children in foster care together with their mothers who are incarcerated to celebrate the holidays. The event serves to maintain bonds between children and their mothers and create lasting family memories.

As the children arrived at the party, they were greeted by Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and one of Santa’s helpers. The children listened to Christmas stories read by Santa’s helper and joined their mothers to sing Christmas carols and draw pictures. The families enjoyed a special holiday meal, and each child received a Christmas gift donated by NYFC. The children were excited to share a fun day with their mothers, and every family embraced the opportunity to spend time together during the holiday season.

NYFC is proud to support CHIPP again this year. Happy holidays!

The NYFC Back-to-School Package program was a focal point of the Gala.  For the first time, the event featured a live auction of the packages, which contain essentials including laptops, Random House dictionaries, Target backpacks and gift cards, Cole Haan wallets, Pantone notebooks, smartwater, L’Oreal Professionnel shampoo and conditioner, Sferra bath towels, and more.  This year NYFC is aiming to provide a Back-to-School Package to each of the 500 college-enrolled young people in foster care in New York City.  The live auction of the $2,500 Back-to-School Packages raised more than $125,000, providing packages for 50 young people and putting us well on our way to achieving our goal!  We are also thrilled to announce that FedEx has agreed to serve as the exclusive delivery service of the Back-to-School Packages in 2008.
