Remembering Oscar de la Renta
The Directors of New Yorkers For Children mourn the loss and will forever cherish the memory of our beloved fellow Director, Oscar de la Renta. He joined the board soon after the organization was founded in 1996 and brought the children in New York City’s child welfare system to the attention of the fashion industry and his legions of friends. More than any other individual he developed our capacity to raise funds and awareness for New York’s most vulnerable children. For Oscar any child in need was his child, and that compassion led to actions that have changed outcomes for countless young lives. We send our heartfelt sympathy to his loving wife Annette and his children and grandchildren. The world has lost an extraordinary man, and we are grateful for all that he contributed throughout his life.

NYFC Board President Eric Brettschneider Appointed as First Deputy Commissioner of ACS
Special E-Bulletin from
Commissioner Gladys Carrión
August 29, 2014
– Appointment of Eric Brettschneider as First Deputy Commissioner –
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Eric Brettschneider as First Deputy Commissioner, effective September 2nd. In this role, Eric will assume additional duties and represent me at both internal and external meetings and will serve as my senior delegate when I am unavailable. Eric will play a significant role in implementing strategic goals we establish with external stakeholders and reinforcing my goal to foster a collaborative, community-based, integrated approach to child and family safety, permanency, and well-being.
Since arriving to ACS from the New York State Office of Children and Families (OCFS) in January, Eric has worked to further these goals by managing our Offices of Community Partnerships, Advocacy, and Public & Private Partnerships as Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Coordination and Integration of Services. As First Deputy Commissioner, he will continue to oversee these offices.
Eric and I worked together for 5 of my 8 years at OCFS and we have collaborated in our various human services roles for many more years. He has a long and distinguished career in child welfare and human services since entering the field in 1967 as a family court intake and child care worker. He spent 10 years as Director of the Queens Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Now (now Safe Space). In 1980, Eric joined the NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA) where he pioneered efforts to ensure that the agency’s services were community-driven and integrated. Eric promoted the progressive vision of comprehensive preventive services, advocated for sibling unification in foster care, and was instrumental in creating a Child Protective Training Academy. As Executive Director of the Agenda for Children Tomorrow, Eric continued this work on behalf of New York City children and their families.
Active in the philanthropic community, Eric is President of the Board of New Yorkers for Children and is President of the Viola W. Bernard Foundation. He also serves as a member of the NYS Office of Court Administration’s Advisory Committee on Court Interpreting.
Eric earned a law degree from Hofstra University Law School, an M.A. in Psychology at the New School for Social Research, and a B.A. from Colgate University. He teaches in NYU’s Department of Metropolitan Studies, Gallatin School and NYU’s Silver School of Social Work.
Join NYFC is congratulating Eric on his new role.
