On Thursday September 16th, NYFC hosted the 16th Annual Fall Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Steve Pemberton, Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, and Global Chief Diverstiy Officer, at Walgreens Boots Alliance,  was presented with the 2015 Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award, due to his steadfast commitment and unwavering dedication to children in foster care. NYFC greatly appreciates Steve and Walgreens’ continued support of  NYFC’s Futures in Motion: Youth CAN! program, an educational and vocational training program for children in foster care.

Maya Haile and Marcus Samuelsson, Chef-Owner of Red Rooster Harlem and Streetbird Rotisserie with NYFC’s Inaugural Community Enhancement Award for their dedication to helping youth in Harlem.

The 2015 New Yorkers For Children North Shore-LIJ Spirit Award, a $10,000 educational scholarship was presented to Antoinette Kane for her academic talent and her ability to overcome life’s challenges. To learn more about Antoinette and other Spirit Award recipients click here.

The event, hosted by Friends Committee Member Alina Cho, raised over $1.3 million and featured dinner, casino games, dancing, and a live auction by Lydia Fenet. Other special guests at the event included Guardian Scholars and additional youth in foster care who are leaders in New Yorkers For Children programs.

The night was Presented by Chloé. Co-Chairs included Vanessa and Henry Cornell, Lise and Michael Evans, Christine and Richard Mack, and Shirin von Wulffen and Frédéric Fekkai.

In celebration of the event, an exclusive Charitybuzz auction of once-in-a-lifetime experiences will open October 1st and run until October 15th. Including a five night stay at the Montage Beverly Hills and tickets to a taping of Saturday Night Live!

2009 Fall Gala Film

Oscar-nominated director Tony Gilroy (Duplicity, Michael Clayton) premiered his first short film, featuring the inspiring stories of eight youth in foster care, at New Yorkers For Children’s Tenth Annual Fall Gala on September 22, 2009.

2010 Fall Gala Film

A short film by Kat Westergaard was shown at the 2010 Fall Gala which follows two NYFC Guardian Scholars as they strive to overcome the challenges presented in earning a college degree while in foster care. The film features one of the Inaugural Guardian Scholars, Basilia, who graduated from Hunter College and Zhanna as she transitions to college with the support of the Hugh Jackman Guardian Scholarship.

2011 Fall Gala Film

A short film by filmmakers Kat Westergaard and Chris Ciancimino was shown at the 2011 Fall Gala that illustrates the challenges that young people in foster care face as they pursue a college education without traditional family support. The film features past NYFC Spirit Award recipient, Glenn Coleman, as he continues his education at graduate school and newly announced NYFC Guardian Scholar, Vanessa Louis, a freshman at Kingsborough Community College.

15th Annual Fall Gala Honoring Michael J. Dowling

2013 Fall Gala Film

New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) celebrated the 2013 Fall Gala on Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Cipriani 42, raising over $1.2 million to benefit youth in foster care in New York City. NYFC Founder and President Emeritus Nicholas Scoppetta, who was himself in foster care as a child, was honored with a lifetime achievement award for child welfare. The above film shares Nicholas Scoppetta’s journey from foster care and highlights his inspirational work as the first Commissioner for the New York City Administration for Children’s Services and founder of NYFC.

The film by Kat Westergaard and Chris Ciancimino was shared with Fall Gala guests to celebrate Nicholas Scoppetta’s 17 years of leadership, which has allowed NYFC to distribute more than $50 million to support youth in care.

14th Annual Fall Gala Honoring Nicholas Scoppetta

On Tuesday, September 17th, New Yorkers For Children hosted their 14th Annual Fall Gala to benefit youth in foster care in New York City.  This year’s gala honored New Yorkers For Children founder Nicholas Scoppetta for his steadfast commitment and unwavering dedication to children in foster care. At the gala, Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs and Commissioner Ronald E. Richter announced that Mayor Bloomberg will dedicate the children’s center to Scoppetta, renaming it the Nicholas Scoppetta Center.  Under Scoppetta’s leadership, NYFC has distributed over $50 million to benefit youth in foster care since the organization’s founding in 1996. Now retired from the board of NYFC, Scoppetta has stayed on as President Emeritus.

Co-Chairs of the 2013 Fall Gala included Donya and Scott Bommer, Susan Burden, Vanessa and Henry Cornell, Oscar de la Renta, Beth Rudin DeWoody, Lise and Michael Evans, Deborra-Lee Furness and Hugh Jackman, Susan and Tony Gilroy, Dayssi and Paul Kanavos, Erika and Kevin Liles, Candice and Scott Posner, Kelly and Jay Sugarman, and Lauran and Justin Tuck.

The event, which raised over $1.2 million, featured dinner, dancing, a special musical performance from Common, and a live auction by Sotheby’s Jamie Niven. The evening was hosted by the exceptional young people whose lives have been changed because of their involvement with NYFC. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the NYFC Spirit Award, a $10,000 scholarship awarded annually at the Fall Gala to a young person in foster care enrolled in college. North Shore-LIJ Health System sponsored two Spirit Awards this year in honor of the 10th Anniversary.  Other special guests at the event included Guardian Scholars and additional youth in foster care who are leaders in New Yorkers For Children programs.

During the Gala, Sotheby’s Vice Chairman Jamie Niven hosted a live auction providing Gala attendees the opportunity to support youth in foster care as they strive to achieve their educational goals. David Stark Design and Production created event décor for the sixth consecutive year, designing an environment inspired by New Yorkers For Children’s mission to promote paths to stable adulthood.  Highlighting the 2012 Fall Gala “Light the Way” theme, Stark created a sparkling lamp-lit pathway which wound through an enchanted forest.

The 15th Annual Fall Gala Was A Shining Success!

On Tuesday September 30th, NYFC hosted the 15th Annual Fall Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street.

Michael J. Dowling, President and CEO of North Shore-LIJ Health System was presented with the 2014 Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award, due to his steadfast commitment and unwavering dedication to children in foster care. The night highlighted the Futures in Motion: Youth CAN! program, an educational and vocational training program for children in foster care created by NYFC and Northwell Health.

The 2014 New Yorkers For Children Northwell Health Spirit Award, a $10,000 educational scholarship was presented to Jermaine Christian for his academic talent and his ability to overcome life’s challenges. To learn more about Jermaine and other Spirit Award recipients click here.

The event, hosted by Greg Kelly,  raised over $1.35 million and featured dinner, dancing, a special musical performance from Estelle accompanied by the Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble, and a live auction by George McNeely. Other special guests at the event included Guardian Scholars and additional youth in foster care who are leaders in New Yorkers For Children programs.

Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks was honored with the Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award for his work with at-risk youth. The evening’s program was hosted by youth in foster care who are leaders in New Yorkers For Children programs.

The 2011 Fall Gala Co-Chairs were Oscar de la Renta, Vanessa and Henry Cornell, Lise and Michael Evans, Kevin and Erika Liles, Ashley and Jeff McDermott, Shirin von Wulffen and Frédéric Fekkai, with Nicholas Scoppetta as the honorary chair. The Fall Gala is NYFC’s major annual fundraising event to provide young people in foster care in New York City with the support that every child deserves. The evening featured dinner, dancing, live auction, and a special musical performance by piano iconoclast ELEW.

NYFC recognized Carmelo for his extensive philanthropic work benefitting at-risk youth. A product of Brooklyn’s Red Hook Projects, Carmelo’s accomplishments extend well beyond the court. Some of his work includes the creation of the Carmelo Anthony Foundation, which helps empower and provide opportunities for underserved kids and families and the co-founding of Courts 4 Kids, a program that finds and refurbishes courts in underserved areas. In 2006, The Giving Back Fund, the premier philanthropic resource for the sports and entertainment communities, ranked Carmelo in their top ten of the “Giving Back 30″ report on celebrity philanthropists in America.

NYFC 2010 Fall Gala

 

On September 21st, New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) raised over $1.6 million to benefit youth in foster care at the 2010 Fall Gala presented by CIRCA. The live auction by Jamie Niven of Sotheby’s raised more than $400,000 to support educational programs. This year’s event honored Keith Bulluck, New York Giants’ All-Pro Linebacker, with the Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award. The evening was hosted by Selita Ebanks who grew up in foster care in New York City and Grammy Award Winning Artist Estelle performed.

The 2010 Fall Gala Co-Chairs were Henry and Vanessa Cornell, Oscar de la Renta, Susan and Tony Gilroy, Tina and Peter Harf, Kevin and Erika Liles, and Shirin von Wulffen and Frédéric Fekkai. NYFC recognized Keith, a native New Yorker, for his longtime commitment and philanthropic efforts benefitting young people in foster care. At the age of 12, Keith was placed in foster care when his mother could no longer care for him. In 2003, he founded The Keith Bulluck Believe & Achieve Foundation to help youth in foster care in Tennessee and New York.

Tenth Annual Fall Gala

 

On September 22, 2009, nearly 700 friends and supporters of New Yorkers For Children celebrated the Tenth Annual Fall Gala at Cipriani 42 to MAKE IT HAPPEN for youth in foster care in New York City. Nina and Mitch Davidson, Oscar de la Renta, Tony and Susan Gilroy, Nancy and Andrew Jarecki, Kevin Liles, Shirin von Wulffen and Frederic Fekkai, and Stephanie and David Wolkoff served as co-chairs for the Gala, which raised $1.5 million to benefit youth in foster care.

A giant wall of yellow and black Post-its, created by David Stark, graced the entrance to Cipriani as guests arrived. Quotes from NYFC youth were projected on the walls, further emphasizing the impact of NYFC’s educational programs. A large “giving tree,” also created entirely of Post-its and featuring messages from NYFC youth, stood in the adjacent chapel. Guests were invited to post their thoughts on how they MAKE IT HAPPEN.

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper served as the host for the evening, and Board Member Kevin Liles presented honoree Mary J. Blige, philanthropist and founder of FFAWN, with the Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award. Blige received the award for her work in empowering young women through education, career development, and promoting strong self-esteem and personal growth.

Spirit Award recipient Shantel Schloss, a junior at Morgan State University in Baltimore, was among the young people in foster care in attendance. Shantel plans to use her $10,000 award toward her college tuition and LSAT classes, which will help her achieve her dream of attending a top law school. Shantel and her peers were especially excited for special musical guest Ne-Yo’s energetic performance, which had guests on their feet and cheering during dinner.

Oscar-nominated director Tony Gilroy premiered his first short film at the Gala, featuring the inspiring stories of eight youth in foster care. The poignant film detailed their past struggles, future aspirations, and how their lives have been changed by NYFC programs. The evening also featured a live auction to benefit educational programs for youth in foster care in New York City, presented by Jamie Niven of Sotheby’s. To start the bidding, new Board Member Nancy Jarecki’s family and friends kicked off the auction with a $10,000 bid in her honor, setting in motion a highly successful auction which raised nearly $250,000.

Fall Gala 2005

Over 700 guests joined New Yorkers For Children at our Fall Gala, held on September 21, 2005 at Cipriani on 42nd Street in New York City.  The event raised 1.3 million in funds to support New York City’s children who are in foster care.

Co-chaired by Oscar de la Renta, Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld, Donya and Scott Bommer and Kelly and Jay Sugarman, the Gala brought together some of New York City’s most influential people from the worlds of entertainment, fashion, government, business, philanthropy and society to show their support for the nonprofit partner of the New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services.

During the program, Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke about the significance of NYFC’s work and presented Marian Wright Edelman, Founder and CEO of The Children’s Defense Fund, with the Nicholas Scoppetta Award for Service to Children.  NYFC Founder and current NYC Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta gave a brief history of the organization and presented hip-hop legend and CEO of Rush Communications Russell Simmons with the Business Leadership Award for his work with inner-city youth.  Children’s Services Commissioner John Mattingly highlighted the unique nature of the partnership between NYFC and Children’s Services and presented Glenn Coleman, a senior at Howard University who entered the foster care system as a teenager, with the Freddie Mac Spirit Award and a $10,000 scholarship for his educational achievement and mentoring involvement.  Grammy Award winner and Time magazine “Hero” Melissa Etheridge finished the evening with a spectacular performance.

The 7th Annual New Yorkers For Children Fall 2006 Gala raised over $1.3 million in support of children in foster care. The event, held on Thursday, September 21, 2006 at Cipriani 42nd Street, was chaired by Oscar de la Renta, Hugh and Deborra-Lee Jackman, and Stephen and Christine Schwarzman and co-chaired by Sarah Jessica Parker and Kevin Huvane. Honorary Chairs included Commissioners Nicholas Scoppetta and John B. Mattingly.

Diane Sawyer of ABC News presented The New Yorkers For Children Spirit Award, a $10,000 scholarship, to Sha’Rhone Frost, a freshman at John Jay College for Criminal Justice. Reverend Alfonso Wyatt, Vice President of the Fund for the City of New York, received the Nicholas Scoppetta Award for Service to Children. Grammy Award winning musician, LeAnn Rimes, performed.

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, Liv Tyler, Diane Kruger, Damon Dash and Rachel Roy and Hana Soukupova attended. Also on hand were Margherita Missoni, Amy Sacco, Alexis Bryan, Elie and Rory Tahari, Fabiola Beracasa, Lucy Sykes and Euan Rellie, Olivia Chantecaille, Kim Hierston, Eleanor Ylvisaker, Lauren DuPont, David and Sybil Yurman, Zac Posen, Kelly Bensimon, Harvey Weinstein and Georgina Chapman, and Keren Craig.

Fall Gala 2007

More than 700 guests joined New Yorkers For Children on September 18th for our Eighth Annual Fall Gala, which was held at 583 Park Avenue.  David Stark’s event décor included mirrors and reflective surfaces to reinforce the Gala’s theme: “Help starts with you!”  The 2007 Gala has raised more than $1.95 million thus far, setting a record for funds raised at this annual event with a 30% increase.

This year’s Gala was chaired by Oscar de la Renta, Dayssi and Paul Kanavos, Ashley and Jeff McDermott, and LeAnn Rimes, along with honorary chairs Commissioners Nicholas Scoppetta and John B. Mattingly.  Following the dinner, chart topping artist Sean Kingston performed several of his hits, including his #1 single “Beautiful Girls.”

NYFC supporters and young people in foster care honored Laura Baudo Sillerman, President of the Tomorrow Foundation, with the Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award, for her dedication to closing the gap between have and have-not children in our community.  This year’s Wachovia New Yorkers For Children Spirit Award, presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, a commitment to community and the determination and ability to overcome the barriers to academic success, was awarded to Ishmael Kamara, a senior at SUNY Oneonta.  Ishmael plans to use the scholarship he received from NYFC to pursue his Masters degree in education.

The NYFC Back-to-School Package program was a focal point of the Gala.  For the first time, the event featured a live auction of the packages, which contain essentials including laptops, Random House dictionaries, Target backpacks and gift cards, Cole Haan wallets, Pantone notebooks, smartwater, L’Oreal Professionnel shampoo and conditioner, Sferra bath towels, and more.  This year NYFC is aiming to provide a Back-to-School Package to each of the 500 college-enrolled young people in foster care in New York City.  The live auction of the $2,500 Back-to-School Packages raised more than $125,000, providing packages for 50 young people and putting us well on our way to achieving our goal!  We are also thrilled to announce that FedEx has agreed to serve as the exclusive delivery service of the Back-to-School Packages in 2008.

The evening also featured a film about six young people who have been impacted by NYFC.  Chantel Johnson, Sha’Rhone Frost, Rayshawn Pettaway, Nathanial Aviles, Dawnae Silvia, and Jessica Maxwell each shared their personal stories about their experiences in foster care, which were both inspirational and a testimony to the impact NYFC programs can have on young people.  We are so grateful for their participation!

NYFC was pleased to be joined by sixteen young people in foster care to celebrate the evening.  Macy’s Inc. generously dressed the youth, while Mario Diab and Dior Beauty provided hair styling and make-up.  We are grateful to these generous supporters for helping our young people look so spectacular.

Fall Gala 2008

On Tuesday, September 16, more than 700 supporters celebrated the Ninth Annual New Yorkers For Children Fall Gala at Cipriani 42.  Co-chairs Oscar de la Renta, Nancy and Andrew Jarecki, Dayssi and Paul Kanavos, Ashley and Jeff McDermott and Caryn and Jeff Zucker were joined by special guest Mariska Hargitay for the evening, which raised nearly $1.9 million for young people in foster care.

Upon entering Cipriani, guests were greeted by an oversized composition notebook, designed by David Stark, which featured quotes from young people in foster care about the importance of New Yorkers For Children (NYFC).  Those messages were echoed throughout the room, with additional quotes projected on the walls and marble composition notebook vases holding lush red flowers on each table.  The décor set the tone for the evening, and was a constant reminder to the guests of how important their support is for young people in foster care throughout New York City.

Jimmy Fallon opened the evening with a special Comedic performance to welcome guests.  Lyor Cohen, Chairman and CEO of Warner Music Group presented honoree Kevin Liles, Executive Vice President of Warner Music Group, with the Nicholas Scoppetta Child Welfare Award for his tireless efforts to promote education and provide inspiration to young people.  In his acceptance speech, he reminded the young people in attendance that despite adversities they may have faced, they are all superstars.  He then welcome surprise guest Lupe Fiasco, who performed his hit single, “Superstar.”

Mariska Hargitay introduced a moving film featuring six of NYFC’s young people, who spoke about the need for support in their quest to achieve their dreams and set the tone for the hugely successful live auction of Guardian Scholarships, Back-to-School Packages, and other resources for students, presented by Sotheby’s Jamie Niven.  In less than ten minutes, guests raised their hands to be champions for NYFC educational programs, raising nearly $350,000.

Spirit Award recipient Kevin Di Benedetto, a junior at Binghamton University, was among the young people in foster care in attendance.  Kevin plans to use his $10,000 scholarship to achieve his goal of completing his PhD in computer science.  Kevin and his peers were thrilled to meet many celebrity attendees at the Gala, including Jay Z, Beyonce, Blake Lively, Joy Bryant, Gayle King, Julianne Moore, Kim Raver and musical guest Patti Labelle, who invited the young people on stage during her roof-raising performance.

New Yorkers For Children is particularly grateful to our Presenting Sponsor, Nordstrom.  In addition to their generous support at the Gala, Nordstrom provided clothing and accessories for the young people in attendance to make them look like the superstars that they are!  Silver sponsors MAC Cosmetics and Frederic Fekkai provided makeup and hair consultations for our young guests to complete their glamorous looks.
